Effective July 15, 2017, the Reykjavik City Government changed its regulations regarding street parking for tour buses in order to control traffic flow on major thoroughfares in the city center and ensure smooth, orderly, and safe travel. In the Reykjavik 101 district, tour buses must pick up and drop off groups at designated city-designated bus stops. If tour buses were to randomly pick up and drop off groups in front of hotels, it could easily lead to traffic congestion and affect the normal passage of other vehicles and pedestrians.

In addition, Icelandic law stipulates that temporary parking in front of hotels cannot exceed a certain time limit, vehicles cannot be turned off, and drivers must remain in the vehicle and be able to leave at any time. If a driver leaves the vehicle to go inside the hotel to find someone, the delay may violate traffic regulations, and in serious cases, may result in the revocation of the company's license. Furthermore, drivers cannot find parking spaces for extended periods, which would waste more time and incur additional parking fees. Meanwhile, tourists waiting at bus stops can more easily identify and locate their tour buses, reducing the risk of missing their tours due to difficulty finding the bus.

Generally, most drivers will drop you off at the hotel entrance for a few minutes and call people according to the passenger list they have obtained. Therefore, please be sure to wait at the hotel entrance or the designated bus stop in advance according to the information on the reservation and itinerary we have given you.

Please understand this. Reykjavik city center is not very large, and tour groups usually need to pick up and drop off multiple groups of guests at multiple locations. If each hotel had to go in to find and wait for people, the entire pick-up process would inevitably be extremely lengthy and waste a lot of time. However, by concentrating pick-up and drop-off at a designated bus station, we can arrange pick-up routes and times more efficiently, reduce waiting time, and ensure that tour groups can depart on time.

Therefore, while designated pick-up and drop-off locations may cause some inconvenience for tourists, this is a reasonable arrangement made to better maintain traffic order, improve pick-up and drop-off efficiency, and ensure the safety of tourists. Shuttle stops are specifically designed for long-distance buses, airport express lines (such as Flybus), and tour group transfers, serving as meeting points or transit hubs for tourists traveling from Reykjavik to other parts of Iceland. Shuttle stops are primarily located in popular tourist areas in downtown Reykjavik, including the BSÍ bus ​​terminal and other designated stops (with specific numbers, such as Bus Stop 1 to 15). Due to vehicle restrictions in the city center, tour group transfers are usually not conducted at hotel entrances, but rather at these designated shuttle stops.

Many people confuse shuttle bus stops with bus stops, but they are actually quite different. Shuttle bus stops primarily serve tourists who need to take long-distance buses, airport express trains, or have booked tours, while bus stops are mainly for local residents and tourists planning to travel within the city. In terms of signage, shuttle bus stop signs are blue or white with the words "Pickup/Dropoff" and a number (e.g., Bus Stop 1, Bus Stop 2, etc.), while bus stop signs are usually yellow and indicate the bus line number (e.g., Line 1, Line 6, etc.). There are fewer shuttle bus stops; the entire capital city has only 16 (including the BSÍ terminal), and the intervals between each stop are relatively long, requiring at least a 10-minute walk to reach the next stop. Bus stops, on the other hand, are located throughout the city, especially in residential and commercial areas, and the intervals between stops are shorter (usually 300-500 meters). It's important to note that only tourists who have booked tours or long-distance buses/airport express trains in advance can wait at shuttle bus stops, unlike public buses where you can wait at any stop.

Regarding local Icelandic tour group pick-up, pick-up typically begins at a designated time. The driver/guide will pick up passengers at various stops based on their hotel's route. The pick-up time usually lasts approximately 30 minutes, and passengers should be ready at the designated pick-up location in advance. Some hotels in Reykjavik allow tour operators to briefly stop at their hotel entrances to pick up passengers, but this is not the case for all hotels. According to Reykjavik City Hall regulations, most tour vehicles can only stop at designated bus stops in the city center. If your accommodation is not assigned to one of the tourist bus stops, or there is no direct pick-up point, simply find the nearest one on the map and select it during the booking process. Pick-up services are available at designated bus stops in Reykjavik city center. Authorized bus stops are marked in blue with a pink top. All bus stops are also marked with a number (from 1 to 14).

BSÍ is Iceland's main bus terminal, located south of Reykjavik's city center, approximately 1.5 kilometers from Hallgrímskirkja , about a 15-minute walk. Close to the city's main thoroughfares, BSÍ connects the city center with surrounding areas, making it a vital transportation hub in Reykjavik.
